Generally ‘open’ to magnetic flux‘, either without a special magnetic core (i.e. an 'air coil'), or with a magnetic rod to focus and enhance the flux.

Typically used for inductive/magnetic sensing, electromagnets, RFID (125 kHz and 13.56 MHz) coils, and antennas.
